I have seen so many of my friends blogs with pictures of cute baby rooms, and I want to know-where in the world do you find your baby furniture-ie: crib, changing table, dresser? I've been looking around in stores and on line and I'm feeling so frustrated about trying to find some of these things with out breaking the bank. HELP!?! I feel like companies are descending on vulnerable, unstable pregnant women who are in the pregnancy fog, and it's just not right. Especially to take advantage of the first time mothers who don't know how this all works. If anyone can make recommendations or if you have any good advice on what you either did or wish you had, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just amazed at how much expenses are incurred before the baby even blinks. Thanks everyone!

Since I don't have a baby I really don't know, but you should definitely have a baby shower in Alamo. I feel like that is how everyone manages to get the big things like crib, etc. I don't know, isn't that right people with kids?
speaking of the Alamo baby shower- I've been thinking about having it AFTER the baby is born because then I can show off the baby. Wouldn't that be so much more fun?
Target is the best- online that is. They have so much baby stuff online and always have good deals, like buy 2 baby items, get free shipping. It is definitely the place to get your big stuff because it is so much more affordable and still really nice. Baby showers help you get things and gifts from rich relatives don't hurt either. A baby shower with the baby is an interesting idea, but it's way nice to get presents and get all set up before the baby comes. Also, you're not having a very good time the first couple months of your baby's life...I would recommend having a party for you and your baby while you're still innocent (i.e. the baby hasn't come out yet). That's just my thoughts.
I don't know how Utah is, but in Lincoln NE, ladies are crazy about garage sales...everyone has them, and people that go on searches for items are intense! We have so many garage sales that advertise baby everything...clothes, and cribs...that might be fun to make a day of to see what good stuff you can find. Another store we have here is Once upon a child, which carries gently used items. They have great stuff, cribs, swings, strollers, etc! We buy lots of cute (sometimes tags are still on) clothes for cheap. They also have a store called "Mommy and Me (resells maturnity clothes and baby stuff)...their has to be something like that in Utah!
Oh, yeah- craig's list is the best!
Garage sales in Alamo are the way to go! They all only have one or two kids with all gymboree stuff. But you have to be there at the right time to do that. My one recommendation would be to get a dresser and make the top of it a baby changing table. I got my stuff from babies r us because my wonderful mother in law gave us a wad of cash to go buy a crib and dresser! It was fun.
I love the baby shower in Alamo comments. We really do go all out. You can get cute stuff. Actually I bought all of our stuff second hand and repainted it. That was before toxic laws and stuff. You don't need a lot of stuff at first. Just the basics, plus all this stuff takes up a lot of room and gets hard to move. When do you guys want to have the Alamo Shower? I will host one. I always like the ones after the fact. (The one time you need lots of clothes is if you don't have a washer or dryer - As long as you can do a load a day you can get by with a minimal amount of clothing.)
I'll be there whether the shower is before the baby or after! That would be great if you could host it, Janene. I can bring some fun baby shower games :) The only thing is we would need to do it in the evening unless it's after the baby comes because then I'll have Saturdays off.
Sheryl, This is Anne Hazen (now Lee) from Danville. I remember you from Girl's Camp. ANYWAY, you need to get yourself on the Babie's R Us mailing list stat. They send out tons of coupons really frequently, and they have really beautiful furniture for a reasonable price. We got our crib, mattress, and all of the goods for $280, which is a really good price. I also cheated, and worked there one-two shifts a week (total of 6-8 hours) so I could get the discount. There's one in Orem (we're in Lindon)
K, I' just catching up reading the blogs and come to find out, you posted sooo much since then. I so excited to have so much to read. Anyway, everyone is right about the baby shower in Alamo. Everyone is soooo generous and it was a real lifesaver because I didn't end up spending more than 50 bucks on stuff we needed. We got the crib, mattress, and bedding from the group gift and tons of clothes from everything else.
I would recommend Target. I was online for hours and hours comparing prices and products and they seem to have the best for the least amount of money. Babies R Us is more expensive but they have random little things and a bigger selection than Target or Walmart. We got a convertible crib but I don't know if we'll ever use it since we're going to have more than one kid. It would've been cheaper to get a regular crib. If you're going to get the whole bedding set, Pottery Barn Kids is actually a couple bucks cheaper than the Babies R Us sets and they are a lot better quality BUT... you only need two cribs sheets for bedding. The rest is really decoration. The quilt is so pretty, I don't know if I want her using it when she's a toddler. You can only use the bumper for the first 5-6 months before it's actually dangerous (when the start rolling around in their sleep they can suffocate and when they crawl and pull-up, they can use it as a step to go over the railing).
For a dresser and/or changing table. You don't need both, especially if you have a closet. I'm actually using the shelf in our closet as the changing table and all our her clothes are their too.
We just didn't have room for anything more than a crib and I'm glad now because it would have been a waste of money. If you want it, you could have a dresser and put the changing pad on top. We don't have a rocker either (no room) but it's been nice not having it because standing and bouncing her is the only exercise I ever get.
Well, that's my opinion on just the furniture. I should have emailed it all to you. If you want to save money in the future, do everything unisex (that's what I did). You don't need to decorate but a cute framed picture, art, or letters that matches the bedding is good above the crib. Check out Kate (Wilson) Hare's blog. Catlin made the room really cute and it was all stuff from IKEA so I think it was cheap, too.
Do I win a prize for writing the most?!?
